513 life as nightmares. In such instances his periodic attention to his troubling dreams throughout this period off ers powerful departure points from which he explores irrational human tendencies toward othering and exclusion, the concept of “moral injury” (150– 51), and our willful denial of the realities of violence and suff ering these entail (163– 65). Beyond the book’s acute timeliness, its storytelling (both fi rstand secondhand) is compelling, and many passages are evocative and nuanced as desert writing. Th ese are stories that require our attention, and we should be pleased to see them fi nding this new vantage point and larger audience in Cantú’s book. English Brooks Snow College
