Abstract:This essay sketches out the reception of Joyce's Ulysses in Civil-War Ireland, bringing into evidence Joyce's early supporters and arguing that they were, for the most part, a group of like-minded, politicized readers, formed under the shadow of Arthur Griffith, and massively disenchanted by the Civil War. They belonged to a small cultural intelligentsia and included Desmond Fitzgerald, Eimar O'Duffy, Bulmer Hobson, P. S. O'Hegarty, and, later, Desmond Ryan. In an atmosphere of hatred and closure that gripped the country, Joyce's novel provided these figures with a liberating space, albeit of the imagination, for it could be read as a foundational text that pitched itself not only against British domination in Ireland but also against the narrowly conservative, Catholic-Irish nationalist model broadly followed by the pro- and anti-Treatyites alike.
