the Connaught District Lunatic Asylum), there was a continuing intent of removing the social stigma attached to the asylums regarding the ‘criminalisation of the mentally ill’ (p. 170). The final chapter, ‘Inside the asylums’, sees the progression of moral management therapies adjust to the influence of medical practice and how such a development impacted everyday procedure. This is done by situating doctors, patients and families as witnesses to what took place inside the four walls. The asylum’s casebooks largely exhibited the history of both staff and patient experience regarding institutional life. It is here that Cox provides such a clear depiction of the historical reality with significant references to the role of religion, recreational activity and patient employment. Cox presents a strong narrative of the social attitudes of all those involved with the Carlow Asylum District in nineteenth-century south-east Ireland. Negotiating Insanity is an insightful analysis and deserves to be widely read, not alone by upcoming academics in the field of research on insanity, but also because it is an invaluable addition to the scholarship of social, medical, psychiatric and historical research in Ireland and Britain.
