There is a popular myth that pathogens such as COVID-19 do not discriminate. Of course they do. Epidemiologists, caregivers and those working with vulnerable cohorts know from experience that the effects of severe illness are never homogenous across demographics. Those among us who are poor, indigent, elderly, incarcerated, Indigenous or disabled are disproportionally affected in terms of health, financial and social outcomes. When it comes to the criminal justice system, these vulnerabilities are of far greater intersectional concern, especially where people are totally reliant on the state for care and support, as is the case with our prison population.
