more coherent and compelling responses” (ix). For Lloyd, this tradition warrants serious consideration in the resuscitation of black politics in the United States. Black Natural Law offers an incisive critique of the current political mood of the United States and more significantly, that of the black political class. Its invocation of higher law (God’s law) and the primacy of reason, emotion, and imagination in political discernment, is a direct challenge to a political class that is fragmented in terms of identity and ideology. It is a rebuke of political relativism in light of the persistence of antiblackness and racism in the United States, mass incarceration being one of its most visible outcomes. Overall, Lloyd attributes the weakness of black politics to an unexamined commitment to philosophical and political pragmatism. Such pragmatism is the principal reason for the decline and invisibility of black natural law. Pragmatism is criticized as insufficient ground for the future of black politics. In Lloyd’s words, “I worry that the pragmatism so prevalent today in black political thought and practice ignores the normativity of tradition, and so suffers from such reduced efficacy—from reduced freedom. The same worry applies to cultural studies. Describing practices and values without considering the ongoing, binding force of tradition makes politics a spectator sport, one particularly well suited for comfortable academics” (156). For Lloyd, the future of black politics needs a sturdy tradition upon which to stand. Such ground is black natural law. Black Natural Law is an ambitious book that raises very important questions about the nature and future of black politics in the United States. The achievement of Black Natural Law is that it points to a five-decades-long brain-drain with respect to black politics; the black political class has been overly reliant on the ideological strategies and political agendas of leftists and liberals, and a black politics that addresses the particularities of the black condition in the United States is virtually nonexistent. Black Natural Law is a highly useful intervention in a moment when the future of black America is uncertain. If anything, it will inspire a necessary conversation regarding the condition of black Americans and strategies for its amelioration in the twenty-first century.
