Consequently two symposia were organized in London by the Physiological and Pharmacological Societies of Great Britain, and the Ciba Foundation with the assistance of the Wellcome Foundation, Ltd. This volume gathers together and correlates the latest interpretations and personal researches concerning histamine by a group of renowned international investigators. Various sections deal with the origin, distribution and fate of histamine in the body, its functional significance and the mechanisms of its release. In the case of a substance so interesting as liistamine, there is, of course, an inclination to postulate its involvement without definite proof. Those interested in research on circulation will, therefore, be interested in the paper of Whelan who found that "it has not been possible to demonstrate the participation of histamine in the dilator responses of the human forearm to adrenaline infusions, brief periods of circulatory arrest, rhythmic exercise, or in the response of the hand or fingers to immersion in cold water." The volume is dedicated to Sir Henry Dale. The frontispiece contains an excellent portrait of this pioneer investigator of histamine.
