processes that were set in motion during colonial days. The question of poverty and survival continues to grip many of these regions, with places like kalahandi becoming national symbols for deprivation. The situation appears to have improved recently, at least in kalahandi, but heavily politicised news of starvation deaths continues to surface from time to time (e.g. The New Indian Express, 2017). Together with such issues, the region has also seen an intensification of Hinduisation, evident in Hindu extremist attacks on Christians. Lurking underneath this apparent attack on a supposedly ‘alien faith’ is an undercurrent of antagonism against tribals, who are seen as primarily responsible for adding to the number of Christian converts. As Pati argues, incidents such as the murder of Graham staines and his two small children, the organised brutal murders and rapes of Christian Dalit converts in the kandhamals or individual cases of discrimination/violence against Dalits show a kind of ‘democratic consensus’ on how the socially excluded, or those working amongst marginalised people, are to be perceived (p. 32). The aim of this posthumous volume, as with most of Pati’s other writing (see Rajpal & saha, 2017), has been to challenge such a consensus and to highlight the colonial underpinnings of such discourses. As one of the most informed and passionate interlocutors who constantly engaged with orissa’s past and present, his voice will be sorely missed.
