The last words of this passage, νίκην κακὴν (τὸ τῆς παροιμίας) νενίκηκεν, have attracted interest. Wolfgang Lackner, the original editor of the text, admitted: “Für das angebliche sprichwörtliche νίκην κακὴν νικᾶν konnte ich keinen Beleg finden.” Winfried Bühler, who recently discussed this problem and responded to Lackner’s comment, also confessed: “Nor do I know any [parallels], having in vain checked up all collections of Greek proverbs and also my personal notes to them.” Bühler says that he originally thought of emending the passage to put Καδμείαν in place of κακήν, i. e. νίκην Καδμείαν νικᾶν, so that it reads as the common proverb Καδμεία νίκη. However, he retracted this emendation on the grounds of word order, observing that the paroemiographers always write Καδμεία νίκη, never νίκη Καδμεία.
