discrete cycles does detract, to some extent, from the historical argument about the intertwining of political and poetic parrhēsia. The argument might benefit from a more complete exploration of less canonical examples, perhaps after the model of Cécile Alduy’s work on the genre of the ‘Amours’ in sixteenth-century France. What is more, I did wonder to what extent the idea of a poetic parrhēsia might require a more careful working out of the ontology of the poetic subject, that is, an exploration of whether in sixteenth-century poetry one encounters speech pro persona sua (as many sixteenth-century theorists seem to have assumed) or a poetic construction built up from topoi (or, as is likely, an uneasy fusion of these possibilities). The ethical stake of these alternatives seems not entirely mapped out, nor indeed the ethical divergences between feigned parrhēsia and its more ‘sincere’ counterpart. Such quibbles do not detract from the fascination of the subject or indeed the elegance of Nazarian’s readings of poetic texts in a volume that will be of considerable use to scholars of sixteenth-century poetics for some time to come.
