it right for him, as an anthropologist, to reveal secrets, to write about and make public the tricks of the trickster: is this not a risk to Kodjo’s business, and does it not give a textbook guide to the embassy in how not to grant visas? These are important ethical questions of methodology. Finding himself in the in-between position as a well-known American scholar respected by the embassy and as a long-time anthropologist not only studying but also having helped set up service learning programs in rural communities of Northern Togo, Piot is deeply engaged with Togolese lives. Should he then, as an author, be involved, and how much information from the embassy or the street should he reveal? We revisit these deep and challenging questions with the author throughout the book as its stories unfold. We often see Kodjo and Piot side by side, as they encounter challenging situations between the street and the embassy. These situations make The Fixer a highly recommended read for those interested in the methodology and ethics of field-based research and ethnography, in addition to its value for migration and transnational studies. The Fixer is a reminder that we cannot address issues of immigration without addressing global inequalities. It shows us the inability of any wall, of any height or sophistication, to stop the mobility of those he calls “existential migrants” whose desires for imagined elsewheres lead them to risk their lives to get there.
