Part Five, ‘Marriage and Continental Europe’, focuses on the Hapsburg courts, including examining the relationship of Spain and its Italian territories and the influence of the Brussels court on the Anglo-Spanish relationship. The stand-out chapter in this section is Rubén González Cuerva’s discussion of the Austrian Match – the concurrent negotiations for the infanta Maria Anna with both England and Austria which demonstrate attempts to thwart both the Spanish Match for Charles as well as a move to block the French Match by offering a Hapsburg prince for Henrietta Maria. The first chapter by Melinda J. Gough in the final section ‘Marriage and Ceremony’ also looks at attempts by Spain to create matches with France, including a proposed triple match, as well as with the Stuarts by means of diplomatic ‘stroking’. Finally, the collection ends with Andrea de Meo Arbore’s consideration of a physical impact of the Stuart negotiations for Catholic brides, the Queen’s Chapel at St. James, which demonstrates stylistic links to the royal nunnery of Descalzas Reales in Madrid through the input of diplomatic negotiations to create a suitable place of worship for an infanta. In sum, this is a strong collection which offers new perspectives and crucial context for early Stuart matrimonial diplomacy. However, a few of the more contextual studies would benefit from making more explicit connections to the marriages and wider negotiations for more cohesion with the rest of the chapters in the collection. Overall however, this volume is a solid contribution to the fields of early modern studies, political history, royal studies and British and European history, and would make an excellent addition to any academic library.
