matter among its audience. Equally, both works could benefit from the inclusion of a comparative, inter-regional perspective, one which would demonstrate what made the local forms of Old Belief under study distinctive from other branches. Such an approach might also allow for the study of movement and transmission between regions, thereby more thoroughly connecting the local dimension to the national and the imperial. One feels this lack particularly with De Simone’s effort: although his examination of the Belaia Krinitsa hierarchy is explicitly centred on Moscow, one cannot forget that this was, after all, a hierarchy with branches not only in the Russian Empire but also in Bukovina, part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Understanding the national and international character of this group is surely of importance when evaluating the community’s self-definition and identity, the problematic at the heart of his monograph. In sum, both of these monographs make a splendid and largely original contribution to the existing literature in both languages. In demonstrating Old Belief’s flexibility and adaptability in the face of varying local conditions and shifting government policy, they do much to demythologize Old Belief, all too often seen through an ideological lens as an unchanging and isolated series of communities. The two works do this through strong exploitation of the archival sources (especially those produced by Old Believers themselves) and sagacious analysis. They are recommended to scholars and students alike, particularly those with an interest in Russian religions more broadly.
