Trentino, whose fate she bracingly compares with that of the subjects of Italy’s African colonies. The final essay, by co-editor Payk, brings us back to Poland’s borders with an apparently quaint but deadly serious dispute in the Free City of Danzig over red Polish post-boxes. Taken together, the volume localizes and globalizes the often abstract issue of sovereign and legitimate authority in the early 1920s, bringing it right down to quotidian realities as the evocative cover photograph – of a German-Polish border crossing in 1930, complete with cycling locals – suggests.
