Dutch Revolt remains largely confined to national borders. Also, in the context of the Early Modern Wars of religion in Europe, the Dutch Revolt does not attract as much international scholarly attention as other conflicts. This translation might therefore contribute to what Dutch historian Judith Pollman in 2009 called the ‘internationalization’ of the Dutch Revolt. Van der Lem himself emphasizes the international context of the conflict, too, by stressing that ‘the Spanish king was the ruler of an empire and the most powerful figure in the international political arena’ (14): the Revolt in the Netherlands was therefore not the only problem the king had to deal with. At the same time, Van der Lem manages to do justice to the local context as well – histories of the revolt tend to focus on Holland and Flanders, but Van der Lem also takes into account the more remote countryside in the eastern provinces and the often overlooked French-speaking provinces in the south. It is an asset that in this translation the many illustrations in colour that were first added in the 2015 revised version have been included here as well. As curator of Rare Books at Leiden University, Van der Lem undoubtedly is in a position to make a representative selection of important documents, prints, and paintings. The events of the revolt inspired many visual and often propagandistic accounts, and including them mirrors the interdisciplinary approach of recent research on the revolt, which is sometimes even described as the first ‘media war’. Finally, on a more critical note: although this edition has been produced with great care, one cannot help but notice the translation is often very literal, resulting in crooked sentences and grammar constructions. Unfortunately, this detracts slightly from what is otherwise a very readable and well-written book. Precisely because of the high overall quality of this edition, complete with clarifying maps, an index and a bibliography, it is a shame that little attention has been paid to these translation details. This does not, however, change the fact that this book is a useful account of the revolt, recommended for a broad audience.
