The New Zealand Ministry of Education (MoE) is an organization looking to use measured environmental data to manage its portfolio of buildings and have deployed a one-point sensor to measure the environmental conditions of 90 selected schools. Using the MoE portfolio as a case study, physical measurements and observations were carried out in three typical classrooms in three schools, to determine the adequacy of using a single sensor, to predict the lighting performance across a classroom. The results showed that measuring lighting at a single location or height may not be an accurate indicator of the lighting performance across a space, but a one-point sensor measurement on a vertical wall could predict illuminance across the centre of the horizontal measuring plane. The findings present an estimation approach to triage good and poorly lit classrooms in a large school property portfolio to prioritize remediation works, assets management and evidence-based policy decisions.
