The voice of communication in comprehensive internationalization

ABSTRACT According to the International Association of Universities, an increasing interdependence among nations as well as intensified mobility of goods, ideas, and people has had the effect of making internationalization more of an institutional imperative. Communication is frequently conceptualised in this conversation as an independent variable that is facilitating the dependent variable – the internationalization of higher education. While communication technologies can bring students and educators together, communication as a discipline provides our institutions and students with the theoretical and methodological grounding for adjudicating the benefits, consequences, and meanings of an increasingly global world. This article provides an overview of the history and current climate of internationalization, specific examples of how faculty and administrators around the world can partner to achieve comprehensive internationalization at the macro, micro, and meso levels, and delineate how communication, as a discipline, can and should be a voice in that conversation.
