Your Excellency, Honorable President of Addis Ababa University, Honorable Presidents and Vice Presidents of Universities, Distinguished Delegates, Students and Guests, Colleagues, Ladies and Gentlemen: I greet you on my own behalf and on behalf of the African Union (AU) Commission: Department of Human Resources, Science and Technology. This department is tasked with matters pertaining to Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, and Youth Development, covering the 55 Member States of the African Union. I am honored to have been invited to the 4th Biennial Africa Academy of Management (AFAM) Conference, here in Addis Ababa. I am pleased to note that your organization is truly Pan African; open to all Africa and the Diaspora. I am excited to see the range of topics on which you have carried out research. My hope is that the knowledge you generate finds its way to influence policy and practice in our nations. Here I would like to add that one of our dilemmas (or predicaments) in Africa today is precisely that we have not sufficiently capitalized on links between knowledge and intellectual capital on the one hand, and policy and practice on the other. I commend AFAM on the inauguration of the Junior Fellowship program. We need to replicate models of mentoring young academics and researchers within deliberate succession systems for nurturing the next generation of African scholars. I am also thrilled that the current host, Addis Ababa University of Commerce, established in 1943 as Ethiopia’s first business school, is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year. I expect that the university could furnish us with a very interesting review of progress over the years: for example, how your programs evolved with the changing times, with the growth of knowledge and technology, with the changes in the country, and perhaps in Africa and the world; and furthermore, how you have influenced and been influenced by the changes. Congratulations on your 75th anniversary year and for hosting this conference in your prestigious college, also visiting the headquarters of the African Union. The African Union is just over 50 years old, having celebrated its 50th anniversary with much retrospection and introspection. The African Union is looking ahead to explore how Africa might build on the opportunities and strengths developed over the years; at at the same time drawing lessons from its past successes and failures. This process has resulted in a 50-year vision statement, named Agenda 2016, which unpacks the AU’s people-centered
