American missions does not include a locator inset map, so most readers will need to consult another map of that continent to place them in context. Even more surprising – in light of the wealth of information about missions in both continents – is the fact that all of the book’s twenty-four photographs of missions are of those in Mexico; none in from South America. Given the iconography mentioned above, photographs of the missions would have made the South American material shine even brighter. These criticisms should in no way detract from my praise. Although Jackson envisions this being his last book, I see it as a wonderful starting point that will inspire future researchers to conduct more comparative research on Latin America’s frontiers.
