sented by a dearth of textual sources by and about Esteban does not have to hinder these efforts. He attempts to marshal context fromwhat little was written about Esteban, which brings an array of subjects before the reader, including race and the association of skin color with terms used to describe the man, including black and moor, but without providing any critical apparatus, in this case, from the fields of race and black studies, to properly flesh out the significance of a black, possibly Muslim, participant in the Spanish invasion. A curious component of this book is a prefatory chapter, “Notes for the Modern Reader,” in which the author explains sixteenth-century spelling and naming conventions, as well as their interpretations by non-Spaniards over the centuries, particularly because the target readership for this book, which is published by a university press, should be scholars who already possess knowledge about the Narváez and Cabeza de Vaca expedition, and thus recognize Esteban’s name from the historiography. The book in this way seems more suitable for a non-specialist and perhaps general audience, rather than for historians knowledgeable of this period and who possess the language expertise to access a broader array of sources. The book also contains information that distracts from its central purpose. For instance, several pages detail the activities of Columbus and Las Casas in the Americas (pp. 21–27), presumably for a reader unfamiliar with the period. Several chapters also document the Spanish expedition without shedding any new light on the experiences of Esteban or even those of the Indigenous peoples who interacted with the invaders. Another clue that this work is destined for general audiences is the prose, which impacts the experience of reading the book, as there are many one-sentence paragraphs and much outdated language (such as “Negroes,” p. 10) that sometimes weaken the thrust of the arguments. Furthermore, the work relies upon multifarious sources ranging from email communications and interviews, peer-reviewed and unreviewed publications, as well as newspapers and popular culture. My comments should thus be contextualized in this light, as our readers will have been expecting a more scholarly and critical framing for this book and its subject matter. In my case, I also was hoping to encounter new archival materials as well as non-textual sources that would yield new information about the experiences of Esteban and others like him.
