but his attendant notes are rather meager for a Hakluyt volume. The two accounts of contact with Easter Island, almost a half of a century apart, are strikingly similar. For example, González and his men were welcomed and treated well by the natives, as were Roggeveen and his crew before them, though the natives seemed to have been relatively unimpressed by both groups of visitors to their isolated shores. They perhaps had seen sails in the distance off their island before or had been visited previously by other Europeans. The major difference between the two reports, of course, is that for González Easter Island was a destination of some geopolitical importance to Spain, whereas for Roggeveen it was merely a stop along the way on his greater quest to find the “Southern Continent.” Therefore, the González account is more extensive and detailed than the extract from Roggeveen’s log published here. What has brought growing attention to Easter Island, on the part of scholars and tourists alike, since its annexation by Chile in 1888 is the presence of antique hieroglyphics and, more importantly, the now famous moai, huge large-headed human-form tufa statutes, ranging from 10 to 40 feet in height, carved by early Polynesian inhabitants. But neither Roggeveen, who provided the first European account of the moai, nor González wase particularly impressed by them. For that matter, neither was Corney in his Introduction. González’s lack of reaction is reminiscent of that of the Spanish to the Grand Canyon, rather than a natural wonder, for them it was an impediment to their progress into North America. The reissue of this volume is certainly a worthwhile endeavor. It brings almost forgotten, once somewhat obscure, but nevertheless significant primary sources on Pacific history into the present context. Its potential audience today is broader than a century ago, and this paperback edition should be of more than passing interest to anyone drawn to the history of discovery, exploration, empire, and travel. The current response to this book will itself be an exercise in historical and historiographical change.
