as well as an understanding of what you want to do, as all languages have different strengths and weaknesses. The tools that catalogers may find useful with their coding skills include regular expressions, shell scripts, and XSLT. Hansen likened regular expressions to a more powerful version of find and replace, as it makes sophisticated bulk changes and standardization of metadata possible. Shell scripts, the “duct tape” of programming because “they can be used quickly to fix a problem,” are a computer program that enables the manipulation of multiple files in a single directory. And, finally, XSLT, or eXtensible stylesheet language transformation, is a tool that can be used to apply a style to a metadata file similarly to how CSS interacts with HTML. Hansen then provided a couple of use cases for these tools and shared some suggestions for getting started with coding. Her favorite online tools (all free) for learning the basics are: Codeacademy, w3schools, and GitHub CodeCamp. Finally, Hansen shared some tips for overcoming the inertia often associated with learning a new skill. The first was to have an actual project at work to which you can apply your newly learned skills, as it will make it more meaningful and help you to retain what you learned. Second, be sure to practice your skills so you do not forget what you have learned. And lastly, commit to a consistent schedule for that practice time and find someone who is interested in practicing with you. Sharing that learning experience with other librarians will help you stay with it and may even lead to some interesting collaborations.
