ABSTRACT Part of a special issue devoted to the centenary of the Film Institute VGIK, this article considers the artistic beginning of the future film director and teacher Sergei Gerasimov. He began by studying acting, later in the workshop of the Factory of the Eccentric Actor (FEKS) under the direction of Grigorii Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg. Their work was characterized by the use of acrobatics, boxing and gesture, which mark Gerasimov’s early work as actor, as the FEKS studio moved from theatre to film. The article explores Gerasimov’s formation as actor, specifically his role as a villain and his meeting with Tamara Makarova. The imminent conflict with his teachers and the beginning of his independent work are analysed in the context of direction, specifically the inheritance of FEKS in Gerasimov’s own films.
