“W hat’s So Great About Art, Anyway?” A Teacher’s Odyssey is a refreshing, dynamic graphic novel depicting the dual life of an artist–educator as she reflects on her experiences and navigates the world of art education. Rachel Branham cleverly merges her life as a teacher with larger theories of art education and art education history in a visually stimulating and easy to access text. Beginning with her personal experience of artmaking and how she became an art teacher, each consecutive chapter addresses another critical issue in American art education and the concerns and questions of preservice teachers. The graphic novel as a form of text is an uncommonly produced resource despite its wide appeal to visual arts educators. Recently, Branham’s book was listed as a recommended resource and best seller in the National Art Education Association (2018) publication Add Color to Your Practice, so naturally I decided it was worth a look.
