Punctuation: Providing the Setting for Translation?

ABSTRACT As we know, punctuation is traditionally regarded as a phenomenon confined to the surface of a written text, a mere reflection of more substantial qualities of the underlying linguistic structure, particularly those concerning the grammatical network. So far, it is striking, at any rate in the postreformational history of Swedish, that translators – even those frequently and radically restructuring this network – seem generally inclined to take over its reflection, i.e., in the demarcation of sentences, to restore the author’s punctuation in the target text. It almost looks like punctuation sets the operative framework for translation on the grammatical level. Some implications of this observation are suggested.
