In Karel Schoeman’s novel, Another Country, the main character, Versluis, is a Dutchman who travels to Bloemfontein in the late nineteenth century for health reasons. There he encounters a couple of British military officers on their way to the Transvaal. ‘I never set out on a journey without my Tacitus’, one of them claims. Versluis retorts: ‘I prefer poetry myself – I, on the other hand, always take Virgil along when I travel.’ The British officer then vehemently pronounces:
