Editors Regina Lee Blaszczyk and Ben Wubs present a volume of research essays and interviews that treat the history and recent contexts of color and trend forecasting. They hold faculty positions at University of Leeds and Erasmus University Rotterdam, respectively. The book emerged from a one-day conference titled “The History and Future of Fashion Prediction: University Meets Industry” at Erasmus University. The conference in turn grew out of a collaborative project called “The Enterprise of Culture: International Structures and Connections in the Fashion Industry since 1945” that was funded by the European Union’s Humanities in the European Research Area. Chapter 1, titled “Beyond the Crystal Ball: The Rationale Behind Color and Trend Forecasting,” serves as the introduction, including a topical summary of each of the following thirteen chapters. Here the editors posit that to advance fashion studies “it is essential to probe the inner workings of the fashion system both as ‘enterprise’ and as ‘culture’” (4). They describe the work as “the first comprehensive historical study of color and trend prediction in Europe, America, and Asia” (4). The book focuses on business-to-business relationships and activities rather than producer-to-consumer interactions. The fashion system under examination is one situated within capitalist commerce as opposed to other systems based upon social control or identity.
