Clothing collections at land-grant universities typically derived from a faculty or staff member’s teaching and research interests. These collections include the material culture, ephemera, and by-products of the location and the spirit of the university. Iowa State University’s (ISU) Textiles and Clothing Museum (TCM) is no exception. The objects contained within the TCM date to the beginning of the home economics discipline. The early involvement of faculty members shaped the collecting focus of the 9,000-plus objects, with significant holdings of Japanese katagami stencils, twentieth-century Guatemalan huipiles, mid-twentiethcentury garments by American designers as well as the more everyday, pragmatic examples of dress and textiles. The collection of everyday dresses concentrates on clothing from the 1920s to 1990s with garments donated by alumni, community members, faculty, and staff. Because the collection holdings are based on unsolicited donations, they include little in the way of current-day clothing or clothing intentionally meant to represent diverse perspectives. In their exhibit, Queer Fashion and Style: Stories from the Heartland, the curators intentionally emphasized how identities are negotiated in everyday styles by queer women in the Midwest region of the United States from the late twentieth century to the present. Despite its locale, Iowa has played an important role in the history of the Gay Rights Movement. In the 1970s, one of the first Gay Alliance organizations started at the University of Iowa. The LGBTQIAþ Student Success Center for Iowa State University was founded in 1992 and is an integral part of the campus community. Since 2007, state law has provided protection against employment discrimination in regards to both sexual orientation and gender identification. On April 3, 2009, Iowa became only the third state to legally recognize same-sex marriage.
