ABSTRACT Empress Eugénie and Princess Mathilde stand as key figures of the Second Empire. Eugénie led the nation as empress and regent; Mathilde reigned in the arts as a practitioner and a salonnière. The two women had much in common: beauty, fame, family, and fortune. Yet biographers repeatedly set the women against each other as foils. Where Eugénie is compassionate, Mathilde is callous; when Eugénie is frivolous, Mathilde is intellectual. The article explores the pairing of Eugénie and Mathilde in biographical texts, considering both the motivation and means by which the women function as foils and symbols of their epoch.
