Decolonizing design is a fashionable concept often discussed as theory but rarely enacted as practice. In Designs for the Pluriverse: Radical Interdependence, Autonomy, and the Making of Worlds, Arturo Escobar, a Colombian-American anthropologist interested in post-capitalist realities, attempts to change this. He narrates a series of processes and approaches that designers – and even those who are not – can use to decolonize ourselves and develop an autonomous design discipline in a pluriverse. To define pluriverse, Escobar uses the anti-globalization group EZLN’s (Ej ercito Zapatista de Liberaci on Nacional) explanation: “a world where many worlds fit” (XVI). He elaborates with the concept of autonom ıa (autonomy), a set of conditions that evolve collectively from within communities. With these concepts as a framework, Escobar explores actionable models for decolonizing Juan Carlos Rodr ıguez Rivera is Assistant Professor of Graphic Design and Diversity Studies at California College of the Arts. juan@thejohncharles.com © 2019 Juan Carlos Rodríguez Rivera DOI: 10.1080/17547075.2019.1664496

juan@thejohncharles.com © 2019 Juan Carlos Rodríguez Rivera DOI:10.1080/17547075.2019.1664496
