It is a sad honour to write a brief and rather personal obituary for the life of Joel Kahn, who died on 1st May 2017 after a year-long struggle with lung cancer. It is an honour because it is a boon to be able to speak appreciatively about Joel and his work; and sad because it makes one feel again how terrible it is that Joel is no longer physically with us. I order my thoughts in two parts. First (1), I speak about some of the more significant aspects of Joel’s work, and then more personally about how it has inspired my own writing and teaching. Second (2), I describe my experience of working with Joel, for which I am eternally grateful.
