ABSTRACT In contemporary Russia, the memory of the past and practices of commemoration have become a contested issue for politicians and citizens alike. Disputes about the “right commemoration” of past events and heroes take place both on the federal and regional levels. This article is devoted to the commemoration in Russian regions of key actors in the Civil war of 1918–1922, and more specifically the Committee of Members of the Constituent Assembly (Komuch) and the Czechoslovak Legion. Not only professional historians but also local history enthusiasts continue to debate the historical role of Komuch and the Legion intensely. A central finding in the article is that the language of memory in this debate has no clear terms and in compensation borrows actively commemoration terms linked to the memory of the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945. The author argues that such processes facilitate the escalation of clashes in commemoration practices and eventually leads to an intensification of the political split in Russian society.
