Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin (1799–1837) has rightly been regarded as Russia’s greatest poet and the founder of modern Russian literature. In addition to lyrics composed in widely differing styles, he also wrote historical poems, novels, short stories, and dramas. His works were heavily influenced by Russian history and folklore and have been roundly praised for their emotional and intellectual depth. A literary genius, Pushkin has secured an important place not only in the annals of Russian literature, but also in the history of Russian culture. Known in Russia as “the jewel of Russian literature,” Pushkin enjoys enormous recognition and love in his home country. He is rightly considered the most Russian poet. Indeed, his contributions to Russian culture are superior to any of his predecessors or successors. He is credited with being the founding father of modern Russian language, and not only because his employment of language is truly amazing in both its lucidity and insightfulness. Elevating colloquial Russian, he established the language of everyday usage as part of the literary canon. Innovative in his own work, he also changed the Russian literary paradigm, forming its unique style and turning its attention to the real life of contemporary society. Furthermore, through his conspicuously virtuosic and varying writing technique he influenced the manner in which many of the nineteenth-century Russian poets and novelists would write and compose their own works, prompting the development of nearly all literary genres of the time. Yet what makes Pushkin the greatest national poet is that his writings express Russian national consciousness in the most complete Russian Studies in Philosophy, vol. 57, no. 3, 2019, pp. 223–227. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC ISSN: 1061-1967 (print)/ISSN 1558-0431 (online) DOI: https://doi.org/10.1080/10611967.2019.1677056

©Taylor&Francis Group,LLC ISSN:1061-1967(印刷)/ ISSN 1558-0431(在线)DOI:https://doi.org/10.1080/10611967.2019.1677056
