This book is an original contribution to studies in both phenomenology and intercultural philosophy. Throughout its eleven chapters, the author engages with a number of important phenomenologists, such as Husserl, Heidegger, Patočka, Foucault (arguably also a phenomenologist), and Merleau-Ponty. For the non-Western intellectual resources, the author draws on the Laozi (老子), the Mengzi (Mencius 孟子), and, finally, one of his mentors, Lao Sze-Kwang (勞思光). The author’s aim is to promote intercultural understanding in philosophy, to give us a satisfactory account of intercultural experience, to show a way of entering into the horizon of another culture, and thus to offer a philosophical response to the “intensification of conflicts among cultures in the twenty-first century” (1). This way includes the following steps (9–14, 193–94):
