This article describes a new method of finding kinship families in a community and tracking their trajectories over historical time. The method is applied to different sectors of the population of two rural parishes near York in the nineteenth century, namely individuals enumerated in the decennial censuses, fathers listed in the baptismal registers, and burials identified by memorial inscriptions in the churchyards. Enclosure of the fields favoured the gentry and clergy in one of these parishes and the small landowners in the other. An attempt is made in the context of enclosure debates to relate the variable fortunes of kinship families to this difference.
