ABSTRACT This introduction outlines some conceptual and historical issues signaled by “Romantic Elements,” the conference theme of the 2019 annual meeting of the North American Society for the Study of Romanticism (NASSR) in Chicago. I begin by identifying some of the distinctive features of this theme in relation to other recent NASSR conferences. I then discuss the tension between this theme’s suggestion of fundamental aspects of the literature and culture of the period—and of Romantic studies—and this theme’s simultaneous capacity to suggest expanded configurations of Romanticism. I conclude by explaining the organizational logic of this issue and by summarizing the arguments of the issue contributors in relation to one another.
