ABSTRACT This article argues for the interest of Joseph Priestley’s theory of materialism, particularly as developed in two texts—Disquisitions Relating to Matter and Spirit (1777) and the lengthy set of epistolary exchanges with Richard Price, published in 1778 as A Free Discussion of the Doctrines of Materialism, and Philosophical Necessity. Although these are, in my view, the two most significant and compelling pieces of Priestley’s metaphysical writings, they have not been a significant focus for scholars of Romanticism. Here, I urge our attention in their direction by arguing for their capacity to revise our understanding of picturesque aesthetics as well as for their general relevance to a contemporary critical moment in which an ontological question about the nature of physical matter is (once again) felt to have direct bearing on the nature of aesthetics.
