Lindsey Collen Looks at Ecology in Her Novels
English Studies in Africa Pub Date : 2019-01-02 , DOI: 10.1080/00138398.2019.1629684
Lindsey Collen

I look at the three ways in which characters from two of my novels expose three kinds of ecological fracture: between humans, as a species, and the rest of nature; within our bodies as we sell our time to employers; between classes of buyers and sellers of our natural time. In There Is a Tide I show this through an example in the narrative and in Getting Rid of It through the structure underpinning the action – but largely outside the novel. And I end with a few hints on change in the future and also, at the level of my craft, with a few hints on the genesis of my novels.
