Abstract In this essay I differentiate among and explore some of the nuances of the notions of place, ‘accommodation’ and ‘locatedness’ in the writing of Richard Ford. I formulate a thematic principle that I suggest is central to an understanding of his oeuvre as a whole. Drawing freely on published interviews and memoirs, I hypothesize a biographical basis for the principle in Ford’s childhood. I then discuss the implications of this as they are manifest in Ford’s second novel, The Ultimate Good Luck.
