Professor Stanley Ridge, immediate past-President of the English Academy, passed away on 30 January 2018 at the age of 76. He studied at the Universities of Natal, York (UK), British Columbia and Stellenbosch. Stan joined UWC in 1979 and served until 2007 as Dean of Arts, Vice-Rector: Academic and Pro Vice-Chancellor. He was Chair of the Council of the National English Literary Museum, Chairperson of the Western Cape Language Committee and was awarded the English Academy Gold Medal. He was a respected scholar in the fields of language and education policy, literary studies and translation studies. The Stanley Ridge Memorial Lecture would be hosted by UWC and the English Academy in August 2018.
