The subject of this article is William Burroughs’s first work, Junky ([1953] 2003. London: Penguin). In particular, the relationship within it between experience and representation, text and biography, author and narrator are discussed, as are questions of genre and relevant structural elements. Of particular interest is the construction of the narrator, William Lee, in relation to the author, and as a figure manifesting Burroughs’s subcultural journey into addiction, and the meanings it takes in the text. Through Lee’s narrative, but also through the unavoidable reading of this text through the prism of Burroughs’s later subcultural fame, the real and fictional events depicted in Junky, and the mode of their representation, constitute a comment on Burroughs’s lifelong literary concerns and artistic outlook.

London: Penguin)。
