Research suggests a need for ongoing teacher training, which necessarily involves helping teachers to make the most of the learning opportunities that teaching offers. In six chapters, the authors bring together theory, research evidence, and examples of practical situations to argue the potential of sharing the role of teacher with the students, with the aim of offering more and better learning opportunities to all pupils – and teachers. The book takes evidence from research in different stages of formal education as well as plenty of learning evidence from informal contexts. In the future, research should inform practice, so that current research evidence is used in the design of specific learning-by-teaching intervention proposals; and at the same time doing research on the intervention proposals should help to shed light on the elements involved in the learning-by-teaching potential. In a nutshell, this book offers a valuable unique comprehensive picture of learning by teaching, gathering and clearly organising the dispersion of studies and practices. The authors’ effort to integrate theory, research evidence, and practical implications might be worth it for different readers: for practitioners involved in the business of teaching – from any educational stage and context – who want to implement learning-by-teaching proposals with their students, for researchers who are interested in identifying promising approaches in classroom teaching, and for teacher educators looking for evidence-informed strategies to teaching. This book is particularly timely as United Kingdom is preparing for its 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF). The 2014 REF panel identified world-leading practice-focused research as those that drew on social scientific theory and method, and where learners, teachers, and researchers worked in close cooperation and collaboration. The implication of this for educational researchers is that educational researchers need to work in close collaboration with practitioners if research findings are to feed into practice. In the same way, teachers’ learning experience can also inform research. It is a reciprocal relationship. This book is a good example of how practice informs research and vice versa.
