Added point-like weight increases the levitation time of the falling soft coil spring

Experiments with high-speed video recording of the fall of a pre-stretched steel soft coil spring equipped with an additional point-like weight were carried out. It is shown that the fall of a spring with a weight, as well as without a weight, has a levitation stage of the lower part of the spring and the weight. In this case, in the upper part of the spring a compression shock wave moving downward at an almost constant speed is formed. The dependence of the shock wave velocity on the weight mass is measured. The dependence turned out to be increasing, but this growth is slower than the linear dependence.

The dependence of the levitation stage duration on the weight mass was measured. The dependence also turned out to be increasing, but slower than linear. The upper limit of the growth of this dependence was not reached, but it should be assumed that its growth is limited from above, at least by the spring material plasticity limit.

The main result of the work: the added weight increases the duration of the spring levitation stage, and the greater the weight of the weight, the longer the levitation of the bodies.
