ABSTRACT The largely interdisciplinary literature on sexual compliance, or consensual but unwanted sexual activity, primarily focuses on its function and consequence as a gendered relational maintenance activity. The present study investigated if sexual compliance predicts state mental health in addition to relational satisfaction. Data from a sample of understudied relationship types indicates that sexual compliance negatively predicts mental health during the last 30 days and relationship satisfaction in a non-normative relational sample that includes lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people, practitioners of bondage, domination, and sadomasochism. (BDSM), and polyamorous individuals. Implications and avenues for future research are discussed. Video Abstract Read the transcript Watch the video on Vimeo
