significant amount of effort and care was placed into children’s burials. In Chapter 14, Heidi Dawson-Hobbis examines the prevalence of stress markers exhibited on subadult skeletons alongside associated funerary treatment from three medieval cemeteries in England, noting that high status subadults possessed the highest prevalence rates. Chapter 15, by Eileen Murphy, focuses on an extensive range of funerary characteristics from juvenile burials at the later medieval Gaelic cemetery of Ballyhanna in Co. Donegal (Ireland) as a means of understanding ideological beliefs, agency of the living and the relationship between the living and those they buried at this site. The final chapter of this monograph, by Jonny Geber, explores the mortuary treatment of children from the nineteenth century Kilkenny Workhouse in Ireland. Archaeological and archival evidence revealed that children and adults were treated the same in death. Overall, this is a well-edited monograph and demonstrates the value of adopting multi-disciplinary methods and novel approaches in this field of research. One of the main strengths of this volume is the wide scope of geographical regions and temporal periods addressed, many of which have been overlooked by scholars in the past. These papers highlight the importance of studying juveniles from archaeological sites as they can provide a unique insight into identities, social structures and interactions between the living and the dead. Whilst the majority of chapters (10/16) focus on children in prehistory, the central themes that run throughout each paper make this volume relevant to any scholar interested in the study of children, death and burial, regardless of temporal period.
