More than two years ago, we began the process of putting the SCA’s history into print, anticipating the organization’s 50th anniversary celebration. The bulk of the content summarizing key developments in California archaeology between 1966 and 2016 was supplied by past presidents of the Society and was recorded for posterity in California Archaeology (Volume 8[2]). As part of the original plan, we always intended to include a history of the Society’s relations and engagement with California Native communities. From the very beginning of the SCA, the interaction was a hugely important component of our activities and part of its raison d’etre. Certainly, the relationship has not always been an easy one and the conversation has shifted dramatically over the last five decades; indeed, it is those changes that we felt were of paramount importance to document in print. Perhaps not surprisingly, an effort of this importance wound up taking much more time than any other component of the Society’s 50-year history, and was it not completed in time for inclusion in the 50th anniversary volume. The first 30 years of the history of SCA–Native California relations was published earlier this year (California Archaeology, Volume 9[1]). In this volume, we complete the final two decades, bringing the history up to the present. Also in the course of completing this key piece of our Society’s history, we realized that the initial timeline of events published in the 2016 50th anniversary edition was missing a few important entries from the most recent decades. Here we have included a revised Society for California Archaeology Selected Timeline of Events Over the Last 50 Years (Table 1). Today, the SCA is a vibrant and active player in the nation’s archaeological community, providing content and support to a number of organizations. We are involved with state legislation, we partner with descendant communities in our studies, and we nurture our students who will become the participants and authors of the Society’s next 50 years.
