state of our field, where many new techniques are available to analyse the limited remains available, but the broader scope of the research questions can become lost in the array of new analytical methodologies. While it is certainly valuable to re-analyse archaeological remains and human paleontological remains excavated in the past, new fieldwork in underexplored areas is fundamental to progress in human origins research. This volume is focused largely on East Africa, where much of the research on human origins has taken place. Contributions from researchers working in areas outside this well-studied region would have been welcome, as the archaeological record in South Africa, for example, has in recent years entirely revised our understanding of early modern human behaviour. Perhaps human origins research is now in need of a systematic, step-by-step comparison of regional variation in human skeletal morphology, material culture and diet during the Middle Stone Age in Africa.
