U.S. President Barack Obama’s March 22, 2016 address to the Cuban people in Havana, Cuba aimed at restoring communal relations between Cuba and the United States by providing a vision of a hopeful future that urged Cubans to sacrifice their Castro revolutionary Cuban identities and reconstitutes them under a new Obama-inspired Cuban identity. First, the author illustrates Castro’s revolutionary Cuban narrative. Second, the author addresses Obama’s rhetorical strategy of reconstituting the Cuban people by identifying Obama’s promotion of dissent, his appeal to a shared ancestry, his establishment of a new identity, and potential challenges.
