должен”). Davis acknowledges an earlier translation of the Notebooks into Spanish, and consulting this version may explain some of his decisions. I have often thought that Boris Pasternak’s poems (at least, those of the 1910s and 20s) bristle so much with ideas that even a fairly primitive translation, if accurate in meaning, will be interesting. Some of Mandelstam’s poems here have that quality, for example “All the disasters that I see”, based on elements from Russian folktales. In other cases, though, the translations can seem sort of mad if they lack the rhythmic and (especially) phonetic glue of the originals. When Davis tunes in to these qualities, his translations are admirable. This is a lovely little book that would fit into a purse or a large pocket, easy to hold open in one hand. Kudos to New York Review Books for their strong ongoing series of translations, which bring both new authors and recognized classics into English. Davis’s version of Mandelstam’s Voronezh Notebooks enhances the selections of this important poet in English, and it will certainly be of interest to scholars of comparative translation as well as readers of Russian poetry.
