In Heavens on Earth, Carmen Boullosa asks her readers to imagine living in a world where language—spoken and written—is banned, memories are obliterated, and history is erased. She then takes them on an epic journey through time and space that jumps back and forth and makes stops in between early colonial New Spain and a postapocalyptic future to explore such questions as: Would this be heaven or hell? What would be gained or lost? What would this mean for humanity? Carmen Boullosa (b. 1954) is a novelist, poet, playwright, and essayist. She has published nineteen novels, sixteen volumes of poetry, five plays, and two books for children. Her novels have been well received by critics and the scholarly community, and she has received favorable reviews in the popular press. She has been the recipient of a number of literary awards for her novels, poetry, and plays, including Mexico’s most prestigious literary prize, the Premio Xavier Villaurrutia, for her second novel, Antes (1989), and Berlin’s Anna Segher prize in 1997 for her entire oeuvre up to that point. In addition, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for the Creative Arts, Latin America and the Caribbean, for 1992. Boullosa’s works of fiction are quite diverse and cover many time periods, extending from the pre-Columbian period and Colonial Era to the present moment and even into the future. The subjects in her early fiction include a disturbing story of deteriorating family life inMejor desaparece (1987); a posthumous coming-of-age story in Antes (1989); a retelling of the life of a seventeenth-century buccaneer in Son vacas, somos puercos (1991); the reappearance of the Aztec emperor Moctezuma in late-twentieth-century Mexico City in Llanto: novelas imposibles (1992); the story of a woman who performs miracles in her sleep in La milagrosa (1993); the story of a former French prostitute who dresses like a man in order to begin a new life in sixteenth-century New Spain in Duerme (1994); and the stories of three narrators from three different time periods who experience cycles of utopia and dystopia at different points in Mexican history in Cielos de la Tierra (1997). Boullosa has garnered international attention, and several of her novels have been translated into English, as well as into several major European languages. Her best-selling novel Son vacas, somos puercos: filibusteros del mar Caribe (1991) has been translated into English, French, and German; Antes (1989) has been translated into German, French, and English; La milagrosa (1993) into English, German, and Italian; Duerme (1994) into Dutch, French, German, and Italian; and Mejor desaparece (1987), De un salto descabalga la reina (2002), Treinta años (1999), and Tejas (2013) into English.
