I have translated a short story that shares the title of the collection within which it was published, Una felicidad repulsiva (2013), by Guillermo Martínez, an accomplished Argentine author. This book, which contains a series of short stories, won the Gabriel García Márquez Spanish-American Short Story Award (Premio Hispanoamericano de Cuento Gabriel García Márquez) in 2014. Many of Martínez’s works have been translated into English, French, and various other languages, but this short story collection has yet to be translated. Martínez possesses a wide array of knowledge of various subjects and cultures, as he has lived in many different regions of the world, including Argentina, England, and the United States. It is perhaps in part for this reason, along with his academic background, that his works are full of references to literature, words in both Latin and English in addition to Spanish, and settings in various countries of the world. For example, within “Una felicidad repulsiva” alone, the protagonist lives in Argentina, England, and Canada during various points of the story and also travels to Florida in the United States. In addition to short stories, Martínez has also written many novels, articles, and reviews. His works often transform everyday experiences or situations into something more extreme, horrific, or mysterious by playing with the boundaries between reality and fiction. Guillermo Martínez’s brilliance in working with this theme is certainly visible throughout this collection and specifically in the short story I have rendered into English. In undertaking the translation of “Una felicidad repulsiva,” I knew I would encounter certain difficulties, especially given the story’s multicultural elements and references. I attempted to keep as much of the Argentine and other global references as I could in order to maintain the feeling of foreignness to a certain degree within the text. The original text assumes the reader will have knowledge of basic Latin phrases as well as an understanding of literature. I chose not to explain these references, as the original does not either. I had to make many tough decisions as to which words I wanted to leave in the same language as the original and which I chose to translate to English. I chose to leave the phrase rara avis in the original Latin, as it is one that would lose its effect when translated into English. I contemplated the use of ubiqua or “omnipresent,” and in the end, I made the choice not to translate this Latin word into English. I arrived at this decision because I believe it fits well with the register of the text. Moreover, the protagonist’s father is

GUILLERMO MARTÍNEZ
